He shakes his head. “Why would she—”

“—Oh, you know them.” I shrug. “They’re complete idiots.”

He nods once. “They are.”

I eye him suspiciously. “How checked out are you?”

“Just busy.” He shrugs. “With work. I’m good.”

“Good.” I nod but then I look at him for a second longer. He doesn’t look quite himself. “Are you good though?” I ask him once we get to her door.

He stares at me for a few seconds. “Yep.” He smiles a tight smile. “Are you?”

I nod.

“You two idiots back together?” I shake my head and his head falls back in exasperation. “Magnolia—”

“We’re working on it!” I protest.

He rolls his eyes and I smile at him.

“Do you miss me?” I ask brightly and his mouth twitches. I think maybe I see something breeze over his face but then it scrunches and he shakes his head.

“Nope.”

I blink at his rudeness. “I beg your pardon?”

“Don’t miss you.” He shakes his head more. “Fucking glad to be rid of you, if anything—”

“Oh.” I frown a little and maybe my feelings are hurt a tiny bit, so I push past him to tap on his sister’s door before cautiously opening it.

“Knock knock—” I peek in and Daisy Haites glares up at me.

“What are you doing here?” She frowns.

“Be nice,” Julian tells her over my head.

“Why?” Daisy shrugs, petulant. “She dumped you, remember?”

He says nothing, so I glance over at Julian, my eyes feeling timid and I wonder if he look a little bit sad. And the thought rattles through my mind only for a second, but I wonder whether perhaps I’ve had more loves than I knew of in this lifetime. For a moment I worry that Gus was maybe right.

Then I shake it all off and give her a pleasant smile, eyebrows up.

She waves towards the door. “You can leave.”

“I’m going to assume that this hostility has more to do with the fact that you just watched your boyfriend wheelbarrow another girl and less to do with me personally—”

“Then you’re an idiot,” Daisy tells me and Julian points at her.

“Watch it,” he tells her with his chin and then skulks away without another look at me.

I cautiously go and sit on the edge of her bed.

“Well—” I sigh, straightening out the skirt of my green pleated lace midi dress from Giambattista Valli. “What a week.”

She blinks at me.

“Firstly,” I give her an encouraging smile. “Congratulations! Despite the persisting rumours amongst our friends that we had sex, we did NOT and it seems as though he’s very good at it, so well done you—” She glares over at me. “Not the time? Okay, right, that’s fine—” I shake my head. Such a tough crowd. “Listen, Daisy, those boys are absolute fuckwits.”
