“One day at sunset during the moon cycle, I must meditate and renew the barriers that keep the wild magic contained within our land. While I do handle political discussions and larger problems, my wife must be able to stand on her own. Without both of us doing our part, our barrier will weaken, and the wild magic will seep out into the surrounding area.”

“And before you ask why that is bad,” he paused, smirking at Chloe who stared at him with wide eyes, “the wild magic transforms and can change a simple rabbit into something dangerous. Life is a balance and within this system at Farrow’s Gate, we’ve established that. Now, enough talk, into the tower where you will see for yourself.”

A massive door opened, scraping along the cobbled road. My heart did a strange pitter-patter. I shouldn’t be nervous. I had no reason to be. So why did stepping into the tower send an odd chill down my spine?

One by one we followed Lord Demious inside the building with Baine and a human guard taking up the rear, the remaining force staying behind. The area around my collar itched, and I dug my fingers into the space between the metal and my neck. Scratching at my sweaty skin, I searched the area for anything that might shout a warning about walking into this tower.

The ground floor held nothing but stone, a massive hall with closed doors, and a spiraling staircase that wound up and out of view. Something tugged on my dress, and I turned to Alicia, who gaped at the stairs in horror.

“It’s okay. I’m sure it’s safe.” One flimsy wooden railing that seemed out of place in all the stone surely could hold us, right?

With a gentle nudge, I guided Alicia in front of me and behind Janetta. The quiet girl barely spoke and when she did, the sentences were few. Not only could I not picture her marrying that snore of a lord, but working as a slave for him? How did someone as frail and gentle as this girl end up here?

Surprisingly, Ms. Begalia’s nagging had diminished to soft-spoken assurances that the stairs would hold, that we were fine, and Lord Demious would never put his lovely prospects in harm’s way.

Placing my hand on the rough wood, I took the winding stone steps one at a time and braced myself for the worst.
