She opened her mouth to say something, but the boom of thunder roared over her. Placing my hand on her side, I leaned closer to her ear. “Don’t be afraid. We’ll reach the estate before the storm reaches us.”

Rain began pouring from the sky in heavy sheets. No warning, no time to react. Rosalie lifted her arms above her head trying to cover herself. “You were saying?”

Water covered her face, drowning her hair and the dress she wore. I pulled off my shirt and moved to hold it above her head to shield her. The rain soaked the shirt by the time I had it above Rosalie’s face.

She laughed.

I laughed.

And then something odd happened.

I laughed again.

Rosalie grabbed the shirt and tossed it at me, her smile wide and beautiful. She lifted her arms up to the sky, face tilted to meet the rain head on. Water droplets slid down her cheeks, slicking her long red hair to the sides of her face. She swayed side to side, opening her mouth to drink the raindrops.

Thunder and lightning met in the sky above us, igniting the storm and drumming a beat to match the tempo of my heart. It was in that loud, chaotic moment, I knew exactly why I had decided to save this precious human.
