“Baine!” A fae with the same plum skin as Baine ran up to us. “Is everything okay?”

Baine nodded. “The prospect is safe. How is Lord Demious?”

The fae frowned. “Crankier than usual. He’s been asking for you. Better go see him.”

“I will.” Baine turned to Enola and held out a hand to help her down, which she brushed aside. “Stay here tonight. I’ll see the goat is taken care of. It’s too dangerous to travel now.”

Enola patted Baine’s chest. “Very well. I might as well go visit my old friend when you’re done with him.”

Even completely soaked, Enola was stunning. Her long gray hair hung around her shoulders, and her bright eyes simmered with life. She placed her hands on my arms and smiled. “You take care.”

“Thank you, for everything,” I said.

She looked at Baine then to me. “Take care of him. He’s not as tough as he seems.”

Baine frowned and I held back a laugh. Somehow, I believed Enola understood Baine better than he did. She patted my shoulder and shuffled inside the mansion.

“I’ll bring you to your room,” Baine said and walked toward the front door.

There was no reason to feel nervous, yet my heart would not stop fluttering in my chest. Though we walked in silence, the air seemed filled with unspoken words. He walked beside me, close but not too close.

His boots squeaked against the marble floor.

My heart beat a fastthump thump.

Once, I peeked over at him, only to find his jaw tight and gaze focused ahead.

When he stopped at my door it felt like the end of something.

Why wasn’t I ready to say goodbye?

“Is there anything you need?” he asked.

Looking up at his face, I wanted to say what was on my mind, in my heart, but I couldn’t. There was no way I could explain this strange emotion and how I wanted to spend another day figuring it out.

“Rosalie!” Ara’s voice broke through the silence, and she ran over to me, her navy bow flopping side to side on top of her head. “Are you all right? We’ve been so worried.”

“I’m fine.”

“Oh, you are soaked.” She grabbed my arm. “I’ll run you a hot bath and you can get out of those wet clothes.”

Baine’s gaze met mine and this time I knew exactly what kind of thoughts ran through that mind of his. His light eyes darkened, and his jaw twitched.

“Thank you for keeping her safe, Baine.” Ara tugged me inside.

“Goodbye,” I said to him, and when he looked at me with a sorrowful expression, I suddenly didn’t want him to go.
