She explained to Demious that she couldn’t practice her ability without hurting someone or something, and she didn’t want to do that. He brought over flowers and Janetta spewed a poison cloud from her mouth all over the roses, wilting them in an instant.

But me . . . he saved me for last.

As I headed to the ring, I glanced around for Baine, but he had disappeared at some point. Yesterday had been strange and I wasn’t sure what to make of any of it. I wanted to talk to him more.

“Good afternoon, Rosalie.” Demious removed my collar.

The flame sparked inside me, warming my body, and making me feel whole again. I had to show him something, but not too much. After Baine’s declaration, I knew I didn’t have to marry or be a slave. Of course, I couldn’t act like that. No, I had to pretend to want to win.

Slowly, I created a ball of fire in my palms.

“Surely, you can do more?” Demious hovered near me. “Attack that dummy.”

The dummy had a crude helmet and consisted of burlap bags of stuffed hay. I faced the dummy and focused on the fire. Once I had the flame in my grasp, I visualized it releasing through my fingers and at the target.

Someone clapped, probably Janetta, and I glanced to see Lord Demious nod his approval. Being able to use fire magic wasn’t that uncommon. I hoped that display would be enough to appease him.

Demious snapped the collar back on, snuffing my flame into darkness once again. I ran out of the ring to Janetta who practically bounced on her feet.

“You’re the strongest here,” she whispered.

“No way, poison? That’s a talent.”

She shrugged and we both stood, waiting for our next instructions.

Lord Demious looked to the estate where a servant waved at him.

And right next to that servant waited a Borderlands Agent. I’d recognize the green and red leathers anywhere. Calvin had left with a man dressed in similar attire.

“Ms. Begalia, take the ladies for afternoon tea.” Lord Demious gave a slight bow. “Until tonight.”

I didn’t know why someone from the Borderlands was here, but I had to find out.

Ms. Begalia called us to attention with that incessant clapping of hers, treating us like a bunch of chicks. The other girls around me whispered and gossiped about the day’s events. None of that mattered with a Borderlands Agent here.

Do they know about me? Is it Calvin?

Oh, no, what if it’s Calvin?

I can’t bear to lose him.

Calvin promised he would not use his full potential in battle. He was simply a common fire mage looking to fight and make coin.

Janetta walked in front of me, and I discreetly whispered in her ear.

“I need to leave. If anyone asks, say I’ve retired to my room because the magic use exhausted me.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I’m not sure.”

When the group turned to enter inside, I sprinted toward the entrance I saw Lord Demious and the agent go through. The door opened into a foyer off the drawing room, but I couldn’t hear or see anyone. Where would they have gone?

The male servant with the curls walked past, holding a tray of drinks and pastries.

“Hi,” I said, waving.

He smiled back. “Good afternoon, milady. Can I help you?”
