“You’re excused.” Lord Demious sighed as Alec began going over the schedule of events the women would be taking part in the following weeks.

Leaving, I headed out toward the main hall. Not only would I have to meet with my guards and remind them to leave these women alone, but if any of the prospects were harmed, I would have to answer for it.

We were accustomed to parties but having this many women on the estate for a prolonged time was reckless. Too much concentration of magic could attract darkthings, regardless of how impenetrable our defenses were. Those nightmarish shadow creatures were busy defiling the surrounding area by the Borderlands, but it was well known throughout all of Saol that the demons from the Rift in the Never were drawn to magic. Lord Demious had done a good job of keeping the barrier around Farrow’s Gate intact, yet all this power in one area would not bode well.

Night had fallen and the halls of the estate held nothing but emptiness. As I turned to head to the kitchen, the soft click of a door caused me to stop. With slow movements, I stepped toward the large window in the hall and glanced outside.

Miss Hawk slipped out the front door in her nightgown.

Using my swiftness, I dashed to the entrance just as she stepped onto the cobbled garden path. What was she doing out here at night? And alone? While the grounds were constantly patrolled and the barrier kept out any powerful beings, it did not mean the area was completely safe.

With featherlight steps, I followed her.

The path she walked led to the stone waterfall pool near the orchid garden. A particularly beautiful section of the grounds that many visitors tended to flock to.

The human stood by the edge of the water. Moonlight shone through her sheer-white nightshift, highlighting every curve. Humming, she bent over slightly, playing with the water with her bare foot.

While Lord Demious allowed the guards to venture into town and get our fill, and sometimes even during parties, his prospects were not to be touched. This one would be trouble, which meant trouble for my men.

Quietly, I walked to her, silent and deadly.

Prospect or not, she would learn her place.
