“He’s lying!”

Claudia pointed at Demious with fury in her dark eyes.

Kelia narrowed her gaze at Demious.

He smiled. “Old flame, and a bit bitter she wasn’t chosen.”

“I’m not. Rosalie is a fire mage and the strongest one here. She took an enormous darkthing down by herself.”

I tensed, keeping my hand on Rosalie’s arm. She glanced up at me, worry filling her eyes.

Kelia looked at Rosalie then back at her guards. “Take her.”

No.

Borderlands Agents circled me, and I shoved Rosalie behind my back.

The portal re-opened. “Pay Demious what he’s owed. He can send the rest of the girls in the morning. We’ll take that one now. The magi will want to examine her.” Kelia stepped through, disappearing to the other side.

Dark clouds rolled in overhead, the beginning of another storm. The temperature dropped a few degrees, and wind blew across the grounds.

“It’s okay,” Rosalie whispered behind me, her hand resting on my back. “Let me go.”

“No,” I growled.

I glanced at Lord Demious waiting for him to command me, say something. I owed him a life debt and had been loyal since the moment he saved me, but I couldn’t let them take Rosalie away. Iwouldn’t.

Understanding dawned in Demious’ eyes and he gave me the tiniest nod.

War it is.

And then I shifted.
