“Baine!” The magical portal winked out, taking my fae with it.

He had saved me and sent himself to death instead. My hands shook and I screamed, angry, afraid, and helpless. I had to get this wretched collar off my neck. Lord Demious had handed Kelia the key, but she had tossed it on the ground before going through the portal.

Scrambling to my feet, I ran to the side of the mansion, peeking around the corner. Shadows covered Lord Demious from head to toe and shot out at Kelia who must’ve returned when she realized I wasn’t there.

“You will be thrown into the magi prison for this,” she growled and shot out a beam of blue light that pushed against the shadows.

“No, this is my land and I alone control it. You don’t have the authority!” The shadows slammed into Kelia, pushing her back.

With a pensive expression, she pulled back her arm and clapped her hands together then pushed out. The force of energy shot a hole through the shadows, sending Lord Demious sliding across the grass. He grimaced but immediately ran forward, and tackled Kelia. She screamed, thrown off guard, and I used that chance to run out and search for the key.

Hiding behind a tree, I watched the two tumble on the soil, a mass of black and blue swirling together in a tornado. Borderlands Agents fought against Lord Demious’ guards, making it impossible to move from my spot. How was I supposed to search for a little key with all that fighting?

A hand covered my mouth and I screamed, the sound muffled.

“Shh, it’s me,” Janetta said.

Before I could speak, the lock on my collar clicked open.

Turning around, I wrapped my arms around her, feeling the pulse of my fire warming my core. “You came back.”

“You wouldn’t leave me,” she whispered and hugged me back. “I watched where the key fell and grabbed it as soon as I could.”

She took my hand and pulled me back toward the side of the mansion.

“Where are we going?” I watched the fighting, wondering how we were going to escape. “Where is everyone else?”

“Scattered or inside the mansion. Come on. We need to go hide until the fighting stops.” Pulling me through a side entrance, she dragged me into Lord Demious’ home, my mind whirring.

“Here.” Janetta opened the door to the library and slammed it closed behind us. “We can go hide on the upper floor and wait it out.”

“Wait.” I had to stop and think. “We have to leave. We can’t stay here and hide.”

Janetta chewed her bottom lip and her gaze darted from me to the door. “I’m not a fighter.”

Taking her hands, I stared into her frightful gaze. “But I am.”

She shook her head, eyes brimming with tears. “I don’t want to go to war.”

“Would you rather die fighting for a chance of freedom or under the swarm of a thousand monsters?”

With a shaky breath, she squeezed my hands. “Freedom.”

A cold breeze entered the library, making me turn to the windows which were closed. Instinctively, I tugged Janetta behind me.

“What is it?” she whispered, putting a hand on my back.

“I don’t know. Do you—”

My words died in my throat as a black oval appeared in front of us, the air shimmering and stretching. Alicia stepped through the strange portal, her complexion whiter than the last time we saw her.

“Is it true?” Alicia asked.

“Is what true?” Janetta said as she moved to stand behind me. “Where have you been. Are you okay?”
