A portal to my left opened. Borderlands Agents flowed out, followed by a familiar blonde-haired woman. The crone hissed at the incoming crowd.

“What are you doing crone?” Kelia asked and flicked a hand, ordering her men to surround us.

A female fae, dressed in leather with weapons hanging on every side, walked with Kelia. The bottom of the fae’s face was shrouded in a black mask and her brown hair was pulled back in various braids. She unsheathed two daggers.

“Magiii . . . you will not interfereeee.” The crone pointed at Kelia. “Keep your assassin awayyyyy.”

The brown skinned fae glanced at Kelia before stepping around and heading toward me.

“You have no authority here. The magi have claimed that human and I will take her.” Kelia’s hands glowed blue.

“The Magistrate is deaaddd.”

“What? How?” Kelia held up a hand, making the fae who was only a foot away from me pause.

“We didn’t seeee,” the crone said, hobbling forward, its back humped. “I felt the magic leave.”

“This is problematic.” Kelia’s hands stopped glowing. “What do you want with that human?”

Marco and the remaining guards came from the side of the estate, flanking the soldiers. Even with all of them here, the Borderlands Agents were too many. My gaze went to Janetta who had tears in her eyes. She stood inside the broken entryway; her emotions painted all over her frightened face.

“We will sacrifice the elementallll,” the crone said, revealing my heritage and causing the people around me to whisper. “The next moon cycle is almost uponnn ussss. Her sacrifice will feeeddd the barrierrr until another magistrate is founnddd.”

Kelia nodded. “Take her to the tower. I will meet you there.”

“No!” Janetta ran forward, but Marco grabbed her. “You can’t do this!”

Marco whispered in her ear, holding her tight to his chest.

She struggled, tears flowing freely.

“It’s okay,” I said, holding back the urge to cry. “Marco will get you home like he promised, right?”

The dark fae nodded, his jaw clenched. He kept his arms tight around Janetta, holding her back.

The portal re-opened, and the Borderlands Agents disappeared first.

“Are you sure about this?” the female fae said to Kelia.

“We don’t have any other option right now.”

“The magi won’t be pleased.”

“Go, Raina, and stop reminding me of the facts.”

The females disappeared, the portal closing behind them.

A loud caw brought my attention to the crone who unfurled large wings and tore off into the sky. The cloaked figures holding me, floated upward, taking me away from the estate.

Janetta screamed, cried, the sound piercing my soul.

I didn’t dare look back, because if I did, the tears would never stop.
