“No, no, this can’t be happening.” My body shook as Baine coughed blood onto my dress.

“Go. Kelia will keep her word. I’ll keep the crone busy.”

“No! I’m not leaving you.” With my arms around him, I held him up, refusing to leave his side.

“I love you,” Baine whispered in my ear. “Now, run.”

Pushing away from me, Baine picked up his sword and ran forward, blood splattering the stone with his steps. The crone rushed forward, talons out.

Fire erupted inside me, drowning out the fear and worry.

Rage awakened my flame into a frenzy until my body consisted of nothing but fire. Running, I sprinted past Baine and to the crone, shooting out a fireball and screaming.

The ball of fire sent the crone flying backward, but I didn’t stop. Keeping the momentum, I jumped at the monster, flames digging into its feathered body. It snapped its beak at me and using all my strength, I pushed my magic into its chest, forcing through the barrier that kept the fire out.

The spire broke behind the creature and it tumbled over the edge, me on top.

Baine screamed my name.

Unleashing my magic fully, I let the fire blaze around me, disintegrating my clothes and dressing me in flames until the crone’s beaked face began to melt as it shrieked in agony. Something snatched me away from the crone right before the monster cracked against the ground, black ichor oozing from its head.

An ash raptor flew around the tower, away from the broken body of the crone and over to where the grass swayed. When the bird placed me on the grass, I called back the flames and gazed up at the tower.

Baine . . .

Wind wrapped around me, until the breeze materialized into the fae who had stolen more than my heart. He wrapped his arms around my naked body, hugging me to his chest. “You’re alive.”

“For now,” I said and pulled back to examine his wound. “But you’re hurt.”

He tugged his shirt over his head and pulled it over mine. “I’ll heal.”

My eyes watered and he grabbed my face with his hands. “Is it over?”

“Yes, and I swear to you now, I will never leave you again.” With that promise, he kissed me, and I let the fear of what would happen next fade away.
