Callum’s gaze darkened. “You’re human. Humans aren’t allowed in the city.”

Before he could interrupt with his disdain, I continued. “In exchange for your cooperation, the magi will release you from your imprisonment.”

“You jest.”

“Why would I joke about this?”

His eyes widened, and he moved so quickly to grab my hands, the movement shocked me. “You would release me?”

I snatched my hands away from him. “As soon as the child is retrieved, and we return to the magi. Yes.”

He quieted for a moment, sliding back into his seat, tapping a slender finger against his chin. “Why me? There are other fae who aren’t in prison that could go.”

“Queen Merelda made the exchange. We don’t know much, but she said we’d only be able to reach the city with your aid.”

“That doesn’t make any sense.”

“There have been rumors the city is at war. There’s been little communication from the Underground. It started a few months ago.”

Callum rubbed his chin. “I see.”

“If you know something, tell me.”

He shook his head, and his shoulders sagged. “I’ve been away a long time. I’m not sure of anything.”

His piercing gaze met mine. There was something ancient and wild in his eyes, and I was curious to find out what.
