“What will you promise me, Kelia Ironstone?”

She took his hand and put both of hers on top of them. “I will protect Mab with my life, and when the Rift has been shut, I will return her here.”

“And?”

“And you will have what every powerful king needs.”

His mouth quirked up. “Then we are agreed.”

“I’m sorry.” I folded my arms, clearly not understanding this conversation. “Did I miss something? What is Kelia agreeing to besides bringing Mab back?”

Prince Eldritch turned to me, a slight smile on his lips. “You’ve gotten daft being stuck in that prison all these years.”

He nodded at Kelia. “You bring me my mother’s crown, I’ll allow Mab to leave with you as agreed and when you both return, you and I will be wed.”

“What?” The word came out higher than I intended, but marriage? “You can’t marry a human. You’re the dark fae prince. It would go against our laws.”

“Right you are, old friend, but I will be king and new laws can be made. Not only will we have a new powerful heir to the throne, but we can use it to our advantage. With our combined magic, not even you and your tricks could match us.”

The prince slid his hands up Kelia’s arms. “In our culture bargains our sealed with a kiss.”

“A kiss?” she replied, feigning ignorance. “Is that the only way?”

I had to hide the smile. She knew it could also be done in blood. She didn’t want to kiss him and that relieved me.

“No,” he said to her, lowering his voice. “But if you are uncomfortable with our—”

His words were cut off with Kelia’s lips.

She kissed him?

Prince Eldritch’s eyes widened in shock, but only for a moment before he gripped the back of her neck and kissed her deeply, their mouths moving in such a way that I wanted to send my magic around his throat.

Pulling back with a grin, his gaze met mine and it took all my control to keep my expression slack with uninterest. With a twirl of his finger, he called his men to his flank. “Give them the rod to return to my mother. When you have the crown, return here and we will meet again.”

One of the assassin’s handed Kelia the rod and fell back into the shadows.

A portal to our left opened, and the prince followed by his entourage disappeared through the glowing hole.

“I think that went rather well,” I said. “Except the marriage part. What were you thinking suggesting that?”

“Isn’t this why you taught me?” Kelia dusted off her clothes. “Do you have a plan?”

“Better than yours to marry him.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It does.” I was tired of her blatant disregard of her own desires. “What you want matters and I’m not going to let you throw away your life to him.”

“We’re out of options, Callum.”

Why did my name sound so perfect on her lips? I didn’t have a plan, but I’d figure this out. I’d always been able to find a solution, even if that answer was me spending years in a magi prison—still worth it. “There is always another way.”

“I don’t have time for this rivalry. None of us do. I came here for a child and instead I’m thrown into a royal war and a battle of wits between lovers.”

My face heated and I moved closer to her. “I amnother lover.”

Holding her chin high, Kelia eyed me. “She still wants you, even I can sense it, and when you have your freedom, you’ll run right back into her arms.”
