I nodded and wiped my face, feeling too open and raw to speak.

He wrapped me in a hug. “I’m sorry about your family.”

He stroked my hair and I leaned against his shoulder and held on to him. There were many things I wanted to say and explain, but I couldn’t. After we got Mab out of the city, Callum would be free to go where he wanted with or without me. Would he really come to the surface? Gripping the front of his shirt, I tried not to think of the after and focus only on the now.

Callum slid his arm under my legs and lifted me up. He carried me to the bed. “Rest.”

I grabbed his arm, feeling vulnerable for the first time in my life. “Stay, please.”

A soft smile spread on his face. “Of course.”

He settled in behind me and wrapped the blanket around us. I rolled over so I laid against his chest. With his arms around me, a calmness washed over me, and I knew that somehow, everything would be okay.

When I woke sometime later, I didn’t move away from Callum. Having his arms wrapped around me brought me a sense of peace and rightness.

A soft groan left his lips as he curled into my side. “Morning already?”

“Yes, but we don’t need to get up right now.”

“I don’t want to.” He tugged at the bottom of my shirt. “I’m sorry for the way I treated you yesterday. I was angry and having Prince Eldritch remind me of that idiotic proposal didn’t help.” He rolled me under him. “Would you really have married him?”

“No, I would’ve found a way out.”

Satisfied, he hovered closer to my face. “I’m coming with you.”

“To the surface?”

“Yes, and anywhere else.”

“You mean that?”

“I meant what I said yesterday, and it makes sense now why the queen released me. She knew I would never let Mab be taken by the magi and I wouldn’t have, but I understand what we all face and together, we can win.” He trailed kisses down my neck.

“What about the queen?”

He nibbled behind my ear. “Is my little sparrow jealous?”

Ignoring the rush of heat left by his lips, I continued. “You two had a child together and I know the queen would take you back if you wanted her to.”

“I’d rather go back to prison,” he grumbled. “Besides, I’m not leaving my mate.”

“Your mate?”

Nodding, he pulled back, leaning over me, his hair covering part of his face. “I know you felt the bond when our magic combined.”

“It was unlike anything I’d experienced before.”

“Kiss me with your magic.”

“What?” I thought I’d heard him wrong, but he repeated himself.

“Do as I do, little sparrow,” he purred then opened his mouth just an inch above me, a puff of cold breath washing over my face. “This is my bargain with you that as your mate my heart will never stray to another’s and you will have all of me, forever.”

His confession made me smile from the inside out. I pulled my blue flame up from my core, bringing the familiar magic to my mouth. He moved, pressing his lips to mine, and opening himself up. Closing my eyes, I brought down the barriers I’d created and let him in. When our lips collided, a spark ignited in my chest, a warm energy that flowed back and forth between us, connecting us in a way that surpassed all understanding.

He groaned against my lips, his hands sliding everywhere at once. “You’re mine and I want to feel you all the way down to your soul.” He continued kissing me until our magic blended into one, creating a flame that was the same shade of the deep violet orb we had made, a beautiful blend of both our powers.

When I pulled back, needing to breathe and stop my shaky thoughts, he rolled onto his side with a grin. I didn’t know how this was going to work or what the magi would say, but I couldn’t ignore my feelings or what I wanted anymore.
