I wanted to say something but decided a conversation would make this interaction go on much longer than needed.

Havana eyed me with a mix of confusion and annoyance. “I would love to come visit you,” she said to Azalea.

Azalea leaned forward and brushed her hand across Havana’s cheek. “Tell me, human. Is this your first time at the Oasis?”

Havana’s face reddened, and she cleared her throat before speaking. “It is,” she said holding her chin high, pretending to be unfazed by Azalea’s charm.

With a snap of her finger, Azalea called her guards. Within moments, the two male fae that always flanked her sides appeared next to her. “Havana,” Azalea said, “I’d like you to meet Lark and Acaden.”

Acaden gave a slight bow.

Lark folded his arms, grinning. “Who is this pretty thing?”

“We need to go.” I took Havana’s arm and tugged her to my side.

Lark raised an eyebrow at me, and I ignored him.

“Hello, Captain. It’s good to see you again.” Acaden had always been the sensible one of the group.

I nodded back. I actually liked him. He wasn’t like the other two. He was reasonable and didn’t cause trouble unless his master started it. “This has been fabulous,” I said, “but we have plans.”

“I bet you do,” Lark murmured, eyeing Havana, causing Azalea to laugh.

Grabbing Havana by the waist, I spun her to my right, and away from the three fae. Havana squeaked and I kept my hand firmly on her waist, pulling her up the stairs.

“That was extremely rude,” she hissed.

“Ignore them. They’re no one you want to deal with.”

Havana glanced back, and Azalea gave a little wave before returning to her table of cards. “Seriously, Leon, if this is how you’re going to be my entire trip. I think I can do better by myself.”

Her words sent a stab of fury and a wince of pain through my chest. She didn’t understand my history with those three and I wasn’t about to explain it. My past was not something I wanted to talk about. One of the reasons I even tolerated Azalea was because my mother was quite fond of her. “I thought you were hungry for chicken.”

The mention of food made Havana roll her eyes. “Yes,please. I’m starving. Azalea’s so beautiful. Is she a high fae?”

“Aye.”

“What’s she doing here?”

“That’s her story to tell.”

“You’re being extremely difficult today,” Havana huffed.

My room was at the end of the hall. When we reached the door, I leaned past her, brushing my arm against her side, and opened it. She smiled, her sweet expression making me want to keep her away from anyone else on the island, especially the trio downstairs. Havana wasn’t mine to claim, but every moment beside her made me want to make her mine.
