I stepped back and slid my hand down her arm to grab her hand. “Let’s go find you a mermaid.”

Her smile stayed and she bit her bottom lip. I watched her, wondering if those lips were soft or rough. I shook my head needing to stop staring at her and focus on something else.

“Wait, what about our stuff?” she said, pointing to the cabana.

“The guard will handle it.”

“The guard?” She looked at the monkey who still sat in the open window, very quietly eating a banana.

“You see that little backpack on him?”

She nodded, squinting and turning to get a better view. “Yes”

“He’s got stones in there.”

“You’re kidding.” She laughed. “And what is he going to do with those?”

“Well.” Placing my hands on her hips, I shifted her in front of me. “If anybody tries to enter, and it’s not one of us, our little security guard will throw rocks and make a ton of noise at them.”

“While I don’t want anyone to steal our things, I’d really like to see him do that.”

Leaning by her ear, I whispered, “I’ve seen it and it is very entertaining.”

With a salute to the monkey, I guided Havana toward the cove. Even though I had grown up on the island and spent most of my life here, the Mermaid’s Cove always held something special. I walked toward the east side of the main part of the cove where there were less people. A mermaid I was quite familiar with waded in the water.

Serena swam back and forth, her vibrant red hair trailing along the surface, her pink, shimmering fin splashing up and down. I whistled, catching her attention. She smiled and waved before swimming over to us.

“Hi, Leon.” She leaned against the rocks.

I kneeled. “Hey, Serena. How’s the water today?”

“Warm and wonderful as always,” she said with a grin. She glanced over at Havana who went back to covering herself with her arms. “And who’s this sweet little creature?”

Holding out my hand to gesture Havana forward, I smiled. “That is Havana. It’s her first time at the Oasis.”

“It is?” Serena pulled herself up onto the rock.

Havana’s eyes widened as she gaped at the mermaid’s glittering fin.

“Come in the water with me,” Serena said.

“Me? In the water with you?” Havana bit her bottom lip.

“It’s safe, love,” I said, standing and walking over to her. “These are not sirens. Like I said, mermaids here are fun and safe.”

“And I would never hurt a friend of Leon’s,” Serena said with a wink.

“Well . . .” Havana paused. “I’d really like to.”

Serena held out her arm. “Jump in with me.”

With an excited nod, Havana sat on the black rock next to Serena, staring at the fin.

“Do you want to touch it?” Serena asked, leaning closer.

“Can I?” Havana held out a hand and paused, almost uncertain if she could.

Serena laughed and looked back at me. “I like her.”
