“Who are they sending?” Havoc asked.

“They didn’t say.”

A portal opened in front of us. Six cloaked figures stepped through. I grabbed the hilt of my sword as a seventh figure appeared.

“Raina.” I kept my voice even, not wanting her to see my shock.

“Captain Leon. You are late.” She held two short swords in her hands and pointed one at me and my crew. “The council paid fifty percent up front for you to deliver to the northern outpost.”

Raina was one of the Magi Council’s top warriors. Her path had been one of blood, leaving her fae home to fight at the Borderlands. I had seen her fight once, and she had obliterated every creature who stood in her path.

If it came to a fight, Havoc and I would need to flank her.

“The northern post was demolished by a darkthing swarm. My crew and I didn’t have the magical ability to venture any farther without risking our lives.”

“The lives of all Saol are at stake,” she said, walking toward me. “When you make a deal with the magi, you honor it.”

I could see Havoc’s tension as he gripped his weapons tighter.

“We have your shipment,” I replied. “Safely on our ship.”

“You left your ship unattended.” She pressed the tip of her blade to my chest. Her men moved into formation behind her.

I held up my hands in peace. “I did no such thing.”

“Do not lie to me, Captain, or I will burn your ship to the ground.” She gritted her teeth and snarled at me, pressing on her blade. “There’s nothing alive on that ship.”

“Elon! It’s a good time for you to come out now.”

Harris and Broxton spread out around me, and I held my hand out. “Hold!”

Havoc growled.

“Elon!” I yelled again.

Raina moved back her arm, ready to strike, but it never came. A wind pushed her into her men who caught her. Her eyes widened as Elon appeared out of nowhere.

“Oh, thank you for showing up,” I grumbled at him.

The vampyre cocked his head at Raina. “Am I allowed to eat this one?”

“What is he doing here?” Raina pushed her men back and stood straight.

“Elon is an old friend who requested a visit to the Oasis.”

Raina’s nostrils flared. “You would bring his kind here?”

“His business is his own,” I replied, “and he swore he was only here to search for someone.”

“Yes.” Elon raked a long fingernail over his pale chin. “An old friend sent word. Something stirs this way.”

“Go get our shipment,” Raina ordered her men, and I motioned for Harris to take them on to the ship.

“Careful, Leon. These are dark times.” Raina sheathed her weapons. “The Rift grows bigger every month. We cannot afford mistakes.”

“I know, and I’ll assist with what the magi need, but it’s my duty to protect my crew.”

Raina’s men returned carrying a wooden crate. One of them re-opened the portal.
