“Stop! Please, you have to stop. I’m going to be sick.” My stomach rolled, and my mouth filled with water.

Lark placed me down on the grass. I quickly leaned over by a tree and vomited then slid to my knees. He came back behind me, grabbed my hair, and held it as I vomited again.

“You have a lot of cuts on you,” he said, unfazed by me being sick all over the place.

When I was finished, he released my hair and I sat on the grass leaning my back against the tree. Pieces of my dress had been torn. The sleeve completely ripped off. Little cuts covered everywhere and there was one large gash on my collarbone. My wrists burned and there were so many places that hurt I couldn’t think straight.

Closing my eyes, I cried.

I didn’t know what to do. Everything was falling apart, and I was so scared. I had never seen anything like that swarm. Even though I knew my power could help, I was terrified to go back there. My head pounded and I breathed in, letting the tears fall.

Lark sat on the grass next to me on his knees. “Hey. Look at me.”

I opened my eyes, unable to hold back the sobs breaking through my chest, pain making me want to vomit again.

“You’re going to be fine.” Lark pulled a flask from a pocket in his vest and handed it to me.

Taking the flask, I unscrewed the top and sniffed, surprised it was water. After taking a few long sips, I handed it back to him. “Those things,” I shivered. “They were everywhere. Something was crawling inside . . . inside.”

“You’ll be fine. We’re not near them.Listen, Princess. I’m going to leave you here.”

“Where are you going?”

“Back to the fight.”

“Then I’m coming too. You can’t stop me.”

He narrowed his gaze at me. “I can if I tie you to this tree. I’m not leaving Azalea and Acaden to fight those darkthings alone. You’re not ready for this battle and you’ll only get yourself killed.”

His words were cruel and harsh. I tried to hide the disappointment on my face by covering my mouth with my hands.

“Those two back there are the most important things in my life. I’m not about to leave them. Let us handle this.”

I wanted to argue, but part of me wondered if Lark was right. I’d never fought in a battle before. Training in the courtyard was one thing and I was terrified to return to those monsters. These fae didn’t know me. They owed me nothing. Azalea removed my bracers, and in her eyes that was all she needed to do. The only person that I knew here had left.

“Here.” Lark slipped out a dagger from a sheath on his belt and handed it to me. “Stay here and rest.”

Tears fell and he paused, almost as if seeing me cry would change his mind, instead, he shook his head, turned around and sprinted off. When his figure faded from sight, I pulled my knees to my chest, laid my head down and cried.
