Out here there was nothing but waves and an open sea. The sun was almost at the horizon and beautiful warm hues cascaded out, rolling with the tides.

Leon pulled me onto his lap, getting as close to me as possible.

“I’ve never been to the Borderlands,” he admitted, and there was a hesitation in his voice. “I don’t know what we’re going to be facing, but I am not leaving your side for any of it, and if at any time you want to leave, I will get us out of there. No matter what I have to do.”

I leaned back against his shoulder, and he held me tight. “Just think, Leon,

we can close the Rift for good. Think of what that will do to our world. The swarm we faced yesterday would decimate a village or town. What would have happened if we weren’t here to help? Do you really think Azalea could have been able to defeat all of that by herself?”

“No,” he replied. “And the fact the swarm came to the Oasis is not a good sign. There hasn’t been a sighting of darkthings this far east in decades.”

“I don’t want to go,” I admitted. “I wish we could stay here, but I also know that if there’s even a chance we can end the suffering, we have to try.”

“Aye, love, though that certainly isn’t the adventure you were searching for.”

As the sun lowered, I turned to face Leon. He shifted me on his lap, so our faces almost touched. “How long do you think we have before she comes?”

“Not long enough,” Leon said, brushing my cheek with his hand. “But I’m not going to waste the time we do have.”

He pressed his lips to mine, and I opened my mouth, letting him in, breathing in his pine and leather scent and letting it take hold of more than just my heart. We may have moments or even less, but on this cliff, away from the future, and far from all the people who wanted something from us, I kissed him as if this was the last time I ever would. That kiss continued with touches and soft-spoken promises. Leon’s hands slid around my body, and I let him explore wherever he wanted to, and I did the same, knowing I couldn’t waste the precious time we had alone.

When the sun disappeared, we looked into each other’s eyes, professing our love, over and over until the words embedded into our souls, never to depart.

I had left home searching for an adventure, and I stumbled into the grandest one of all.
