“Well, I believe in you. I know you are going to do well on the written test. Don’t convince yourself otherwise.”

Emma is giving me the best pep talk of my life when someone knocks on the door. Emma opens the door and there is Isaac. What is he doing here? Has he come to gloat? I want him to go away, but he manages to get Emma to let him in.

“How great is it that you’re here Isaac,” Emma says.

Emma seems so happy to see Isaac. I am irritated.

“Let me go into the kitchen and make some lemonade. I’ll be right back.”

Emma leaves the room and Isaac gives me an annoyed look.

“What are you doing here?” Isaac asks.

“I wanted to talk to Emma about what went down today,” I say.

Emma comes back to the living room with the lemonade. She gives us each a glass. It is cold, sweet, and tart. By far, it’s the best lemonade that I have ever tasted.

We all sit back down and try to engage in a conversation. Emma is as sweet as can be, but Isaac and I are grumpy at this point. I don’t know about him, but I want Emma to myself. I hate that Isaac is here.

Emma tells us about funny things that happen at the strip club. We try to laugh but there is an awkward tension in the room between Isaac and me. Why did he have to show up?

There is no reason for me to be here anymore. I feel like a jerk for having a bad attitude. It’s time for the both of us to leave. Isaac has the same idea that I have.

“Thanks, Emma, for the lemonade but I better be getting home,” Isaac says.

“I better get going too.”

“But I thought maybe we could all go to dinner together. It’s still early,” Emma can’t disguise her disappointment.

Looking at Isaac, I say that we both better get some rest before our next shift. And then we both leave Emma’s apartment. Already I’m making plans to see Emma again.

She is a gem and I want to be around her as much as possible. However, I’ll have to beat Isaac to the punch and visit Emma without him around.
