My father looks like he is going to have a heart attack with his veins pulsing and his eyes bulging out of his eye sockets. His face looks scarlet red.

“Watch what you say to me Mollie.”

“You need to step back, William. Emma’s love life is none of your business.”

“It sure as hell is my business!”

“No, it is not,” Mollie emphasizes each word.

“Emma is an independent woman. It’s been a long time since you had to support her. For years now, she has paid for her apartment, her food, and her clothes. Lord knows how she does it with the price of electricity and water as high as it is.”

“She is still my daughter and my responsibility.”

“Yes, she is your daughter, but it’s been a long time since she has been your responsibility.”

My mother came over to me and put her arm around my shoulder.

“I applaud Emma for excellent choices and ability to support herself through these tough economic times.”

“Excellent choices? For Christ sakes your daughter is a stripper and you just found her on the couch being intimate with two men.”

My mother just stands there with her arm around me. My father can’t believe it; the two women in his life have jumped ship. We never disagree with him. Sure, we do things on our own, but we always do it with caution and behind his back. He is after all “the chief”.

Now in one afternoon, we have come forward and set him straight. He glares at my mother and me. He shakes his head and then bolts out of my house. My mother lets go of me and goes to the chair to pick up her purse.

She came back to where I was standing and gives me a hug.

“I don’t blame you. They are both good looking men.”

Then she lets go of me and follows my father out the door.

Witnessing my mother stand up to my father on my behalf is amazing! I can’t wait to tell Luke and Isaac. Someone finally stood up to my father! Maybe this will inspire them. I want to high-five someone. This had been an amazing afternoon.
