“Ladies and gentlemen, members of the Miami Fire Station, I’d like to present to you your new chief, Fire Captain Isaac Watson.”
The crowd of fire fighters old and new, family members, and surrounding departments cheer. Captain Martin shakes my hand and looks me in the eye with the look of a proud father, which makes so much of what we’ve been through worth it. I hope it’s worth it for him too.
Emma and Luke are in the front row with large, goofy smiles on their faces. Luke claps between whistles and Emma cheers louder than the rest. They both wipe their eyes dramatically, as if they’re in actual tears, when they see me looking. I know someone’s going to snap a photo of me rolling my eyes at them, but that’s a hard habit to break and I hardly care at the moment.

Ex-Captain Martin walks off the tiny stage and takes place next to his daughter. The microphone that the department rented for the moment is connected to a tiny amp, which squeaks embarrassingly in my hands.

The applause dies down as the small audience of comrades gaze up at me.
“Um, I just want to thank Captain Martin, not only for training us to be the best firefighters we can be, but for having our backs inallaspects of life. Without his incredible service to this department, who knows where any of us would be?”
The crowd erupts in loving cheers for Captain Martin and Emma leans over, giving him a sweet kiss on the cheek.
“I also want to thank his daughter, Emma Martin. Without her help, this department wouldn’t have solved one of the biggest arson cases Miami has seen this year.”
I’m sure most folks in the room had faith in her innocence, and by the sound of the cheers, I guess my suspicions were right.
“Last, but not least, I want to thank Luke Burrows, who has been by my side from the very beginning. Luke, without training with you, working out beside you, bouncing ideas off you, hanging out… without yousaving my life, I wouldn’t be here. Thank you. I couldn’t have done it without you. Withoutanyof you.”
“Oh, Captain Watson,”Emma moans as I suck dangerously hard on the skin of her neck.

Luke mirrors my movements on the opposite side of Emma.
“Okay, you two have got to stop if you want me to keep going.”
Emma and Luke giggle together like they do when they’ve been planning little annoyances against me. Instead of recoiling, I press against them with a playful growl.
Emma presses her lips to mine before Luke and I peel her shirt over her head. She shuffles with her bra while I connect with Luke over her shoulder and soon, we are all without our clothes.
