Dylan

Two years later…

Hoisting my son up from his car seat is getting harder and harder. He’s growing so fast. Too fast for my liking.

I miss him being a baby. Andrew and Hazel are in the kitchen making dinner. I kiss both of them on the cheek.

“He didn’t wake up when you took him out of his car seat?” Hazel asks.

“No, the drive was just what he needed to relax,” I answer.

Andrew could tell that I was struggling to hold our toddler and took him gently from my arms.

“I’ll put him to bed. That’s my favorite thing,” Andrew whispers.

He took the baby from my arms, and I was free to help finish dinner prep.

“Go sit down Dylan, I’ve got this,” Hazel says.

I reluctantly sit down at the dinner table that is already set.

“Hey, what’s our best wine doing on the table?” I ask.

“You’ll see,” Hazel says.

I just shrug my shoulders and sit back to enjoy waiting. The kitchen is fragrant with the Italian smell of lasagna and garlic bread. Andrew returns and Hazel brings the bread and lasagna to the table. She sits down and we all say grace together.

“I have some news.”

“What kind of news?”

Hazel has tears in her eyes, and I grow a bit scared. What is she going to tell us? Is she ill? She’s been looking kind of peaked these past few days.

Hazel takes my hand on one side and Andrew’s on the other.

“Boys, I’m pregnant!”

Andrew immediately gets up from the table and so do I. We give Hazel a group hug.

“And there’s more,” Hazel says.

Now my stomach is back in knots.

“It’s twins!”

I get dizzy and have to sit down. I’m visibly shaken. Andrew on the other hand whoops.

“Well then, we’re going to give you one hell of a baby shower! Right Dylan?”

I can’t believe that’s the comment that Andrew chooses to say.

“Sure,” I say.

The room grows dark and the last thing I see is Hazel’s worried face.

Two months go by and to tell you the truth, I have a lot of making up to do. She assumes that I don’t want the twins. This isn’t true.

I take over the baby shower plans and proceed to plan the most elaborate shower that I can think of. It isn’t until the day of our “Taco ‘Bout Twins” shower that Hazel seems to finally be coming around to the theme.
