Evelyn
I’m glad Sean is a heavy sleeper because I’m able to slip away from him on the couch to make a quick pot of coffee. He’s so precious. His mouth hangs open just a little, but barely a snore comes out and his dark brown hair is a perfect mess.
The pot whirs and hisses, dripping the coffee a few drops at a time as the smell fills the air.
“Mm,” I moan, leaning against the counter.
“Damn, that smells good.”
My heart skips a beat at Sean’s voice.
“Good Lord, you scared the hell out of me.”
“Sorry,” Sean says with a laugh, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
How is he so incredibly charming and sexy, even when he’s just woken up? I pour him a cup and hand it to him, sitting next to him at the counter with mine.
“How are you feeling?”
“A lot better.”
I watch his strong, sharp jaw as he drinks.
“I just want to thank you, Evelyn. For everything. Really, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
God, am I blushing? How is this man, who I find it so ridiculously fun to tease, making me blush? I shake my head. Here I am, thinking I have the upper hand, when really it might be him.Them.
“I appreciate that.”
Sean smiles at me, looking at me with his bright green eyes. Somehow, I feel entirely connected to him on a level we’ve never been connected to before. It’s deeper, like he can see me inside and out.
Sean clears his throat, breaking our silent conversation.
“I’ve got a ton of work today.”
He smiles.
“And you’re happy about that?”
“Of course.”
I almost scoff.
“You’re lucky you have a job you love. Not everyone has that. Even if they do, I doubt they’re paid as handsomely as you are.”
Sean lays a hand on my arm the way I had with him last night. I can see why I did it now. It’s comforting. It helps.
“You’ll get there, Evelyn.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“It’s my job to be sure.”
Sean smiles a very small, and sweet smile. There’s no hidden agenda, no looking to get laid, nothing behind it other than genuine kindness.
“I guess I can’t argue with that,” I say.
Sean laughs and rises.
