Mattheo

Iknow she wants me. It was written all over her face.I remember our make out session in the car on the way to the gallery. Her kisses taste sweet like red wine, and the way her body felt on top of mine was absolutely divine.

I arrogantly recall the memory and keep it at the forefront of my mind. I still have my beating heart as I dial her number. It's been a few days since we saw each other.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?

"Hello?" Asks a lilting voice on the other end.

"Alexa, are you all right?" I ask, legitimately concerned.

She sighs into the phone.

"I expected a call from you, too."

"What do you mean, 'too'?"

"You're going to ask me out, right?" she inquires, a bit snippy. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound snippy with you."

"What's going on, Alexa?" I swallow hard, and some of my arrogance dwindles along with my resolve.

"I have to tell you that James called me last week. We went out on Saturday."

It’s so silent that you could hear a pin drop.

I try to quell the anger and frustration rising up my back and into my face. I ball my hand into a fist and swing at the air.

FUCK. That rat bastard beat me to the punch.

"Mattheo? Are you still there?" She asks, voice weary.

"Yes."

I feign calmness, as I don't want her to know that what she said greatly upsets me.

After a few moments, she continues.

"I am seeing James, Mattheo. I just wanted you to know."

She almost sounds like she could break into tears.

"Alexa, I was going to ask you out, but I don't want to cause you grief."

I blow out a sigh, not believing what I’m about to say.

"Do you not want to see me any longer? Because we can call it quits right now."

Hopelessness begins to well up in my heart.

She’s quiet, but finally speaks.

"That's just it. I’m so confused right now."

She sighs on the other end, and I can hear the phone rustle around like it’s being moved. "I do want to see you," she finally says.

"Not too long ago, I was alone at the bar. My best friend had just announced her engagement and pregnancy. I was having a major fit of jealousy, and a huge pity party. The bartender called me on my bullshit, and within the week, I met two great guys- and now they’re asking me for dates."

I can hear the challenges in her voice, and I wonder what she’s really going to say.
