After the talk with Trent about his night with Kelly, I’m left wondering if the two of them made out or had sex. He seems a little more at ease than normal and I’m trying not to be jealous, if that were the case.

As I’m working out the rest of my day, I see Kelly walking around talking to other ranch hands, taking notes in her little notepad. I smile and place my attention on the barbed wire I’m fixing to get put up tomorrow along the top of the fence lines.

Maybe that’ll stop the animals from getting out and roaming around. Or better yet, the person or person’s messing with our ranch. I look back up and see Kelly coming towards me. When she’s just a few feet away, she says, “Hey there, pardner,” I look up from the wire momentarily and see her bright smile underneath those intense blue eyes.

My tummy does a few flips and I answer, “Hey, there yourself, miss,” I say to her, finally wrapping the rest of the line onto the spool that fits our machine. “What are you up to today?”

She leans on the barn door, folding her arms across her chest. “Oh, you know, gathering dirt and sifting it out for the real truth.”

“Yeah?” I say, tipping my hat back onto the crown of my head so that I can see more of her. I wonder what her eyes will look like under the light of the moon, stars twinkling above. Hmm, that might be our date tonight.

Every gal likes romancing from a guy.

“Yep, so far, I’ve ruled out most anyone here,” Kelly looks at me intently, biting her lower lip. “But there are some possible leads that I’m sniffing out.” She stands up straight with her hands behind her back. She moves closer to me and whispers, “I’m so looking forward to our time tonight.” And she smacks my ass lightly while turning to leave.

Tingles emerge and run through my body, bidding my senses to wake up. Trying to look cool as a cucumber, I watch as she walks out, but inside I know that I’m melting from her tap. “And, so am I, but don’t get too dressy for tonight,” I respond so that she can hear me.

As she walks to the door, she keeps her hands behind her back, looking over her shoulder. Her eyes flirt with mine, then she winks at me, raising more than my interest in her. My cock comes to life and I have a difficult time getting him to ease up on the engine.

At least for now.

Finishing up, I head home and take a shower, cleaning myself up for this big adventure with Kelly tonight. I stop by the main homestead, grabbing a picnic basket and a blanket. Putting in a bottle of a fabulous Chianti, I fill the basket with an assortment of fruit, cheese and freshly sliced meats. I toss in a jar of blackberry jam and some crackers for good measure.

Taking the items and placing them in the basket of one of four wheelers, I ride to Kelly’s temporary house, picking her up. She comes out smiling, her attire is appropriate for the evening. “Ready to go?” I ask as she hops on behind me. She puts her arms around my midsection and laughs.

“Take me away on your valiant motor horse!” She plays around with me.

I chuckle and engage the engine, making my way to a far corner, under the stars, away from any prying eyes. I spread the blanket as she sucks in a deep breath, moving her arms up as she breathes.

“I positively love the smell of the great outdoors,” she says sitting as I pour her a glass of the Chianti. “Oh, you must know your wines,” she exclaims, accepting the glass from my hand.

“You keep loving the smell of the great outdoors, and I’ll keep choosing the wines for you to enjoy,” I say, feeling a little more than sheepish for my comment.

We both partake of the cheese and meats, making small talk of how the ranch operates and what detectives actually do. Laughing, she sets her glass down and says, “It’s not like we sit on our ass all day, doing work from a chair and a phone line. While I do admit that there are people that do just that, I’m not a fan.”

I smile at her sucking down the last of her wine. “So, ask of me what you will.”

Kelly looks surprised, but then shoots straight from the hip. “Tell me a little about your relationship with Trent,” she asks directly.

“Well, there’s a lot in that question. Do you usually pack a loaded gun on a date?” I chuckle at my own witticism. “Honestly, Trent and I have been best buds for as far back as I can remember.”

“His mom used to help me when family situations got, umm, a little out of hand. Especially, the times my dad’s fist met my face and body,” I sigh having to recollect those times. “We became instant friends and have remained so.”

“I’m terribly sorry!” she gasps and places a hand on my knee for comfort. “Had I known, I wouldn’t have asked.”

“It is part of my story and I can’t deny it,” I tell her, somewhat despondent about my chances with her. “It was Trent who first talked to me about running away. He told his parents that he was helping me escape my father’s alcohol abuse, so that they would keep in touch with us. That’s where Wayland comes in.”

She removes her hand and gulps her wine. Her eyes are wide under the darkness, but twinkle with the stars. “What happened then?”

“As you know, we were suckered into thinking that would be good for us,” I tell her as I take her hand in mine. “We didn’t have much and you know how that all ended. We have been there for each other for anything and everything.”

“He does have a lot of energy, so I wonder if you think that he’d be causing the destruction,” she asks hesitantly.

I shake my head laughing, and emphatically answer, “Absolutely no way that Trent would be even remotely responsible for this.”

While we sit there in a moment of silence, I hear a rustle coming from the bushes. Kelly looks around, obviously hearing the same noises. “I think we should get out of here,” she offers, helping to quietly put things into the basket. “It’s sort of a creepy feeling here.”

I agree and after folding the blanket, I climb on the four-wheeler. With her arms tightly around my waist, we take off, heading for my place, leaving the unsettling rustling behind us.
