“If he’s the ringmaster, that makes me the clown,” I kid around.

“A rodeo clown maybe,” Kelly rolls over and checks the scope again. “Still nothing.”

Over the next hour or so, our chit-chatting comes to a halt. Feeling that nothing is going to happen, Kelly checks the scope and confirms that nothing is happening. She begins to pack up the scope when we hear a slight sound.

The quiet noise is that of brush being moved away from something else. Trent looks over to me and mouths the words, “Did you hear that?”

I nod my head and Kelly begins to look through the lens of her scope.

Chink! Rattle.

Chink! Rattle.

My eyes grow wide as I realize the sound is that of someone cutting the repairs in the fence line. As I turn silently over, I see the frame of one Elizabeth McNally using a pair of large wire clippers, cutting a hole in the fence again. With my heart racing, I start to jump out, but Kelly stops me with her hand on my arm.

She says ‘no’ with a firm shake of her head.
