I shake my head, feeling beyond miserable. “I’m not shitting you, but I so wish I was. She told her father that I used her and dumped her, and he just called me to tell me to find another sponsor.”

“That’s a fucking disaster! Where will we find the ten grand for the enrollment fees and the new surfboards we need? Those pieces of shit we own will never compete with the ones the professionals have.”

I clench my hand so tight around my beer bottle that I’m surprised it doesn’t shatter in my grip. “I have no idea. Every cent we own between the three of us has gone to Sam as a deposit to buy the bar. We have until Labor Day to find the hundred grand we need to buy the property. If not, he’ll sell to another buyer who already offered him more money. The only reason he’s waiting for us is because he likes the idea that Sam’s Shack could still be owned by a local.”

Matt groans. “Can’t we try to get a loan again?”

I sigh. “From whom? You know better than me that we have nothing as collateral. All we own are the shirts on our backs, your beat-up car, and my rusty bike. No offense, but our only chance to buy Sam’s Shack is to pay cash, and the only way for us to have that kind of cash is to win the surfing competition. Even if we saved our wages for the whole summer, we wouldn’t have enough for everything we need to enroll and compete. Drew has student loans, you do too, and I have to help my folks.”

Matt looks as depressed as I do. “Wait until we tell Drew.”

I’m not looking forward to that. “I’m sorry, bro,” I say. “I had no idea—”

“It’s not your fault, Brady. You had no way to know. Why is Carly working here anyway when she could just vacation here?”

And this is why Matt, Drew, and I are bros. Not just because we grew up together, but because we always have each other’s backs no matter what.

“Fuck if I know. Look, her father just opened his Main Street shop two years ago. She just graduated college and wanted to do her own thing. That’s what she told me that night at the party.”

“Before she sucked your dick?” he taunts.

“Yeah. She told me she just wanted a summer job but never told me who her father was, and I don’t know about you, but when I hook up at a party, I don’t ask for last names.”

“Dude, seriously, this could have happened to any of us. But we’ve got to find the money for that competition. There must be another way.”

I don’t know if there is, but I don’t say anything.

“I’ll tell you what, though, that’s another reason to go to that party tomorrow night and blow off some steam. At this point, what do we have to lose?”

I don’t tell him that I’m fed up with meaningless pussy and fucking girls I won’t even remember the name of the next day. There must be more than that to life, but what else do I have to do? “Sure, bro. I’ll be there. For now, let’s have another drink.”
