Emma’s beautiful, bright baby blues stared up at me. Her hair was curled for the concert, and she had put in a couple of black bows on either side. She didn’t usually wear makeup, but she wore a little eyeliner and some lip gloss for the show.

“His name’s Asher,” I said. “He’s pretty cool.”

Emma walked past me and placed a hand on Asher’s elbow, just as she’d done with me. I couldn’t hear what she said to him over the music, but he gave her a smile and a laugh. The way he looked at her in pure delight made my chest heavy. I was overwhelmed with the need for Emma to go back to where she’d been standing with Stacy and Griffin on the other side of me. I forced my eyes down and away from them and begged my strange thoughts to disappear.

What was it about this guy?

After a moment, Emma came back to my other side and laid her head on my shoulder as best she could. I breathed a bit easier once she returned to her spot next to me. She tapped her foot a little half-heartedly as she watched the band.

Finally, curiosity got the better of me. “What did you say to him?” I teased. Or, at least I hoped it sounded teasing and not annoyed because I was more agitated than anything.

She batted her lashes. “I told him that he and his friends are welcome back at my place after the show.” She shrugged. Emma lived with her parents still, like me, but they’d let her take over the in-law suite of the house because they never used it. “You seem to like him. And we need new friends. The two we came with?” Emma rolled her eyes. “They’re nice and all, but…”

I nodded. I knew exactly what she meant.

“What did he say?” I cocked a brow.

The crowd erupted in applause and screams of delight, and then the opening band took their bow, said their goodnights, and exited the stage.

“He said he’d have to talk to his friends, but he wants to come hang for a bit.”

My heart fluttered. The recorded music came on the surrounding speakers once more for the set change. Asher looked at me and smiled at me and Emma before taking a long drink of the beer. He leaned over to his friends and spoke.

The night was finally about to begin.
