Damn it all.

She crossed the room back to him and downed her own glass and set it next to his on the table. Silently, she stood in front of him and tipped his head up with a finger underneath his chin.

She bent down and kissed his forehead. When she pulled back, his eyes were shut, and his features had smoothed as if he were lost in a dream.

“I believe you.”

He smiled faintly.

“Dinner, tomorrow? You ’n me? We can talk. Like normal people.”

He took her hand and lifted it to his lips, kissing her fingers. He still kept his eyes shut, as if he didn’t want to break whatever vision was playing out in his head. “Consider it done. Get some sleep, princess. You have had a long week, and I fear we’ve more mayhem to come.”

“Oh, goodie.”

“Third floor. Pick any room that strikes your fancy.”

With a shake of her head and a beleaguered smile, she did just that.
