“Your Grace, a word, if you please,” the Dowager Duchess said, glaring at Henry. She reached forward and grabbed his free hand. He let go of Eleanor’s hand then and took a step toward his grandmother.

“Yes, Grandmother?” Henry asked, only scooting a few strides away from Eleanor.

“Have you thought this through?” His grandmother hissed, her violet eyes narrowing to mere slits.

“I have,” Henry replied stoutly.

“And you know all the rumors about that young lady?” His grandmother asked, her eyes darting back toward the place where Eleanor stood watching them.

“I am aware of them,” Henry answered. He wasn’t really bothered by the things people said about Eleanor. He was not in love with her, and maybe if he was, he would be perturbed by the gossip that circulated surrounding her peculiarities. But, as this marriage had been designed simply to alleviate both of their tenuous situations, Henry saw no need to set any store by the tales the ladies of thetontold about his intended.

“And you still wish to proceed with this union?” His grandmother asked, a note of caution tinging her voice.

“Indubitably,” Henry replied. He looked back at Eleanor and saw that she was aglow with delight. Yes, Eleanor looked the part and as Henry walked back toward her, he prayed that she would be able to maintain her sunny and pleasing disposition.
