“Aurelia, why do you think Mr. Bird would do something like that?”

“I regret saying this with my mother in the room but I believe this is the sole reason for Chuck Bird’s deception of my family, a deception that has run for no fewer than five years…” She takes a deep breath and I try to telepathically reach out to her with every ounce of support I can muster. “He has another family. A wife and children—two boys—he has kept secret from us for all this time.”

The room gasps, and all eyes are suddenly on Chuck. He pales even further, if that’s possible, and darts to the back of the room, yanking open a door to Starling’s office. Starling’ssuper privateoffice. I mean, not even Connor goes in there. I glance across at Luca who raises his eyebrows at me. We both know there’s no other way out of that room. The man is cornered.

“We need some help here,” someone calls from below the podium. Aurelia’s mother is lying limp on the floor, the latest revelation having finished her off.

Aurelia looks back to the monitor and out to the room. “That’s all I wanted to say.” She looks at her wristwatch, then up at all the people who have genuinely supported her, and grins. “Happy birthday to me.”

I don’t know if I want to spin her around, drop to the floor and worship at her feet, or bend her over and screw even more joy into her for the fucking awesome, game-changing announcement she just made. Instead, she jumps off the podium, plants a small kiss on her mother’s cheek then strides through the room of shocked faces towards me. She doesn’t stop in front of me like I expect her to. She walks straight past, wrapping her palm around the handle of the door to Starling’s office and turns her face sideways.

“Come, Isaac. I want you to hear this.”
