She was finding it hard to believe that a man like him was single, but maybe he did have a few strikes against him. She pondered what they could be as she sipped the dregs of her coffee. He was pretty high profile and probably a workaholic. His work-life balance was likely just as fucked as Valerie’s was. Some would say he was damaged goods. He’d already been divorced once—and why, she still didn’t know—and he leaned toward non-mainstream sexual play.

Given their current geography, he was probably short on viable candidates.

“That’s a shame.”

She grabbed the handles of both mugs, wrapped the blanket tightly around her shoulders, picked up her clothes and shoes, and carried them below.

He came out of the cockpit as she stepped into the cabin and took the mugs from her. “Go on back to the room and I’ll take care of these.”

She did as he instructed and stepped into the tiny attached bathroom to wash her face and freshen up as he rinsed dishes.

When he joined her in the room, he went straight to his dresser, opened the second drawer, and plucked out a folded white square. “It’ll amuse me to see you wearing that.”

She shook it out. The T-shift was old, faded, and had one of his company’s earliest logos emblazoned across the chest.

“It might even cover your ass.” He reached around and gave it a grope, and just like that, her body went rigid with anticipation. She wanted to know where he’d put his hands next, but all he did was unwrap the blanket from around her. “I’ll be back in a bit. I need to get a little work done before I drop anchor, and then I’ll be up every couple of hours overnight making sure no bigger boat accidentally plows us over.”

“You’re not gonna sleep?”

“I’ll get some rest tomorrow if you’ll be okay with minding the controls and waking me if there are any blips in the radar.”

“You’ll show me how?”

“Yeah, I imagine it’d be easy for an architect to figure out.”

Letting out a long exhalation, he cupped her cheeks and skimmed his thumbs along the bottom of her jaw. For a while, he just stared at her, and his gaze was always so intense. It was hard to endure at the moment, but she wouldn’t dare look away.

She kept looking into his eyes as he did the same into hers. She wondered what he saw when he looked at her like that. She didn’t think they were playing dominance and submission games at the moment, so she had to ask. “What do you see?”

“I look at you and see a woman I should have known months ago, and I wonder what strings I could have pulled to make that happen.”

“I’d probably be in so much trouble if I’d met you months ago.” She would have been distracted to no end. That wasexactlywhat he was—an addictive distraction.

He raised his thick eyebrows slightly and grunted. “Yeah. Good trouble. I crave that so much more than the alternative.”

He kissed her forehead and gave her nipple a playful tweak before walking away.

Good trouble? She pulled the shirt over her head and loosened her hair bun a bit before climbing onto the bed.

I have no idea what that is.
