Carine wasn’t foolish enough to ask Heidi to repeat a single word. If necessary, she’d draw on the ancient art of faking it until she made it.

She hadn’t planned on spending the night, but she was a grown woman with no one to check in with. She could do whatever she wanted, and she wanted more than anything at that moment to crawl into Heidi Dowd's bed.

“I understand,” Carine said.

“Wonderful. Goodnight, sweetheart.”

For at least a minute, Carine stood in a haze, afraid to take even the smallest step.
