“Yes, ma’am.”I carry my plates and cup to the sink.

“Just leave those there.I’ll get them.”She wipes her hands on her apron, then walks up to me.“It’ll work out.I just know it.”

I wrap her in a hug.“Thanks, Ava.”

“Anytime, hun.”She holds up a finger and hurries back to the counter.“Let me pack up a slice of pie for Kent.I saw him out working after dinner, and he looked like he could use some pie. He’s not in with the other guys.”

“I’m sure he’ll love it.”I carry the foil-wrapped plate out to my truck, head back to the cabins, and stop at Kent’s cabin.

After a moment of shuffling, the door opens. His hair is wet, and he’s in a T-shirt and sweatpants.“Hey.What’s up?”

“Ava sent this to you.Said you looked like you needed pie.”I hold out the plate.

“Thanks.How’d it go?”

“The girl never showed.”I shrug.“But it’s whatever.”

“You should call her.”He pulls the door open wider.“Want to come in?”

“Nah.Enjoy your pie.”I turn and stride down the porch steps.

Once I’m in my cabin, I hang my hat and kick off my boots. There might be a great reason for her not coming tonight. And the advice is unanimous that I should call, so I’ll get in touch with Bottle Caps the only way I know how.I’ll go back to her place. But I’ll wait a week, and then I’ll get to see her again.

I hope waiting is the right thing to do.
