After dabbing at her face, she hugs the blue shirt to her chest with one hand and feels around her dress with the other, trying to find the pocket. She taps away on her phone, then hands it to me.“My address is there somewhere.”

I make sure her seat belt is buckled before jogging around to the driver’s seat.“Let me know if you start feeling bad again.”

She nods, then tips her head back.

When I arrived at the party, I saw how people were parked and opted to park on the side of the road. Now I’m happy I did.

I scroll through her phone, open the map app, and thankfully her home address is clearly labeled.

A tear slips down her cheek. She must feel awful.

As I make my way back to the highway, I try to decide what to do.If I drop her off at her house in this condition, I’ll worry about her.But I don’t want to go into her home because she doesn’t really know me, and she’s pretty out of it.

I could take her to the ranch.Ava would take care of her.But this poor woman—Jazzy—would freak if she woke up in a strange place.I mean, I would, so it stands to reason.

Conveniently, there is a fast-food restaurant where I exit for her house, and I pull into the drive-thru line.Maybe something more solid than s’mores will help her feel better.

“Burger or chicken strips?”I’ll also get her fries and a drink. That’ll help balance out whatever she has in her system.

She giggles.“Chicken strips.”

I order chicken for her and get a cheeseburger for myself.

As we wait in line to pull up to the next window, she laughs again.“That doesn’t make sense. They don’t wear clothes. How can they strip?”

Chuckling, I slide my credit card out of my wallet.“Good point. If you want my burger instead, I’m okay with that.”After getting our food, I pull into a parking space.

She picks up a chicken strip and peels the fried part off the outside.“My chicken is stripping.”

I’m not sure what she’s like sober, but like this, she’s funny.

“It probably tastes better with clothes on.”That’s something I never thought I’d say.

After eating the deconstructed chicken strip, she sips her soda, then eats the rest of the chicken without stripping off the fried part.“So good.”Her words are slurring less, and hopefully, her stomach feels better.“Oh, fries!”

While I eat my burger, she eats her fries and mine.As thin as she is, I’m not sure where all the food is hiding. And when it’s all gone, she tilts her head back again.“Thank you.I’ll meet you here tomorrow at six. When I’m feeling better.”

“Sounds like a plan.”Whether she remembers saying that after sleeping off whatever she got into remains to be seen, but I’ll be here.

I check the directions again and start back toward her place.

She’s perkier after eating and tells me all about the best way to grow tomatoes.Never knew fish heads were good for that.

When I pull into her driveway, she pulls two sets of keys out of her pocket. After looking from one set to the other, she drops one set on my center console.“I don’t need those. They aren’t mine.”

I grab those keys before running around to the passenger side.“Let me walk you to the door, and you should probably keep these in case your roommate needs them.”I hold out the other key ring.

“She left with the mullet.”Jazzy shrugs, then takes the keys and shoves them in her pocket.

Since she unlocks her door on the first attempt, leaving her alone doesn’t seem like a horrible idea.

“It was nice meeting you, Jazzy.”

“That’s not my name. What’s yours? You have a pretty face.”She wraps her arms around my neck.

I hold my breath because, well, she really needs to spend quality time with her toothbrush given all that’s happened this evening.“I’m Tyler. And I’ll see you tomorrow at six.Same place?”

“Yes.I’ll have chicken strips again.”She giggles.
