I chuckled. “Thanks.” Emily was surprisingly well-rounded for being so dedicated to her music as an already nationally recognized violinist. I liked to think that I had something to do with that, but the credit probably went to her stubbornness and insistence on attending public school instead of having private tutors like my mother wanted so she could focus more on her music. Since my sister had my stepfather wrapped around her little finger, it had been two against one.

“What is it like being partners with Trenton Mazer?” she asked.

“Great. He’s a fantastic musician.” The truth was a lot more complicated and not something I wanted to discuss with my thirteen-year-old sister.

“I only knew one of the other celebrity partners.”

“Which one?” I asked out of curiosity.

“Lil Will.” Her response didn’t surprise me. I’d been foggy on some of the partners myself. She continued, “You’re lucky to be with Trenton. You’ll probably win because of that alone.”

“Not because I’m talented?” I tried to keep my tone light. Even though I knew she didn’t mean to be hurtful, her comment stung.

“That, too, of course. But you’ll get lots of viewer votes just because of him.”

She was right, and I hated it. If my own sister was willing to say that directly to me, then what would strangers say?

Worse, what if they were right?
