I cringed. “Fondling? Really? That’s your choice of word?”

He tucked the small box into my purse then drew me against him. “Seeing you fondle that ornament made me think of—”

Laughing, I pushed him away. “Stop! This is a family-friendly venue.”

He shrugged. “The heart wants what the heart wants.”

“I don’t think that thought came from your heart.”

But a lot of what he did on a daily basis did come from his heart—taking me skating, the date at the Chinese Theatre, going all out for ourPhantomperformance. He was a good man—the best—and I needed to stop allowing myself to be hung up on things that were outside of our control.

We moved outside the vendor’s stall, and I wrapped my arms around him. “I don’t deserve you.”

He kissed the tip of my nose. “You’re right. You deserve better than me.”

“That’s not true.”

“Why do you get to say you don’t deserve me and I don’t?” He peered at me. “Don’t discount yourself. No one else does.”

I pressed my lips to his instead of answering. I wouldn’t have said that anyone discounted me, necessarily, but they certainly didn’t credit me. Trenton had warned me not to read what the press had to say, but I hadn’t been able to help myself. The trouble was that there wasn’t much to read—almost all mentions of our partnership focused on him.

Ugh.Trenton had gone out of his way to give me the night off fromSing Battle, and I couldn’t stop my mind from returning to it. But I knew one thing that would definitely make me stop thinking. “Let’s go back to your place,” I whispered.
