“Consider me warned.”

Evan leaned on his elbows, his expression no longer playful. “All that other bullshit aside, what gives? Why did you do it?”

I considered giving him a bullshit answer, but given that I’d screwed up his show, I felt like I owed him honesty. “Remember how I told you that Ali was concerned I was the reason we were doing well on the show?”

Evan leaned back. “Ah.” With that one syllable, I knew he understood and that I didn’t need to explain. That was what a dozen years of friendship did.

“She’s got some major confidence issues. It’s weird, though. She’s one hundred percent confident that she’s talented, but she had no confidence when it comes to others recognizing that talent.”

Evan’s mouth flattened into a thin line. “I hate to say it, but what you said makes her sound like a head case. If you ever tell her I said that, I’ll deny it.”

“Don’t worry. I don’t expect to talk to her anytime soon.” I sighed. “She’s got some issues she needs to work through.”

“Maybe if you apologized for getting her disqualified and explained all this to her—”

I’d had the same thought a million times. I shook my head. “No. Lord knows I would help her if I could, but I can’t. She needs to work through her shit on her own.”

Evan downed the rest of his coffee. “I need to get back. Let me know if there’s anything I can do.”

“Don’t talk to more reporters on my behalf,” I said. “I appreciate the sentiment, but don’t.”

“Then don’t pull any more dumbass moves.” With that parting shot, he sauntered out of the café.
