“Business.”

“Whatdoyou do anyway?”

“It’s none of your concern.”

“That seems to be your default answer for just about everything.”

It occurs to me I still don’t know jack shit about him. Not what he does for a living. Not how he’s so sickeningly wealthy. Not even his freaking last name.

Yet his crew hover on the sidelines keeping us protected at all times.

He’s a mystery I’m desperate to solve. If only I was given the clues needed to have a fighting chance.

But one thing I’ve learned about him is he’s cool, calm, and composed. He’s calculated and cold, though that veneer slips when prodded hard enough, like last night when I tried running away. Before that as I danced for him and lust sparked in those electric eyes.

Suddenly, a desire rises up in me to be the one to make him lose control. To be the woman who unleashes whatever darkness he’s containing, for better or for worse.

Our dinner arrives, and we dine in mostly silence. I’m not good with silence…or awkward pauses. It’s killing me as I masterfully pick up a piece of sashimi with my chopsticks. If Gio won’t talk, I will. Even if it’s to myself.

“So, what do you do for fun?” I ask conversationally, like we’re two strangers stuck on a plane together.

“Fun?” He cocks a brow.

“Yeah…fun. You’ve heard of that, right? It’s when you let loose, live a little.”

“What doyoudo for fun?”

“Nice try turning the question back on me, but I’ll bite. I like dancing, which is probably pretty obvious. I enjoy cooking and traveling. Music and movies.”

He scoffs. “Music and movies don’t count. Anyone can like those.”

“Including you? Tell me, Gio, what’s on your ‘recently watched’ on Netflix?”

Given how elusive he is, I don’t expect an answer. Instead he rubs his scruffy jaw and a slight smirk materializes on his mouth. “I don’t have much time for Netflix, but…if I have to guess, probablyPulp Fiction.”

I gasp so loudly, the waiter passing us by glances over. “I lovePulp Fiction! Well…most of Tarantino’s work. Say what you want about him and his assholeness, he’s a great director. ExceptOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood. That was trash.”

Gio gives a low chuckle. “Strong opinions on his films. What’s your favorite?”

“Easy.Kill Bill1and2. Yours?”

“I told you.Pulp Fiction. But I’ll gladly watch any of his films.”

“We should have a movie night,” I blurt out without thinking. I rush to correct myself. “Um, you know…I just meant…if we’re pretending to be a couple. But you said it’s just an appearance thing, so…probably not.”

Humor gleams in his eyes as he stares at me. “Falynn, you must really learn to filter your thoughts more and not say anything at any time.”

“Force of habit. Blame yourself for choosing me.”

“Movie night,” he repeats with some thought. He wipes his mouth with his dinner napkin. “That might be your best idea yet.”

My eyes widen. “Excuse me? You mean you want to?”

He smirks and winks at me. “Perhaps tonight.AfterI handle my business.”

Oh, shit. I think I might be on my way to solving the mystery after all.
