“I could’ve slept through an atomic bomb.”

“I believe you. You barely made it to the bed.”

She lifts her arm and smells her armpit in typical Falynn fashion. “Gross. I need a shower. I need to wash off all of last night’s dirt and blood…” She shudders.

“You and I both. It’s been a long twenty-four hours.”

“Gio…” The sheet loosens as she sits up and curls her legs. She doesn’t meet my eyes, choosing to stare at the thread count in the sheet. “I really thought I was going to die. I…I really thought you weren’t showing up.”

“Hey,” I say, tilting her chin up. Our eyes connect for the first time in a long time, sending my heartbeat into a frenzy. Falynn’s expressive eyes always make my chest radiate with warmth. “I told you I’d never let any harm come to you, didn’t I?”

“I thought I’d never see you again.”

“But we made it. We’re both here. Our hearts are still beating, aren’t they?” My palms slide over the curves of her cheeks, holding her lovely face in my hands. Fucking hell, she truly is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on—even after twenty-four hours of hell, with her hair a tousled mess and dried blood staining her skin. Nowthat’slove.

“I’m sorry I left you. I was scared, and…and I didn’t know what to do.”

“Robby told me what he did. That he poisoned your mind with paranoia. You did what you had to do. You’re a survivor. I love that about you.”

Her eyes soften looking into mine. “You do?”

“Of course I do. You ready for some alone time? Me and you. Relaxing.”

“That’s not a word I thought was in your vocabulary.”

I grip her hand and pull her up, starting for the bathroom. “It is now. C’mon, we both need a shower. We smell like shit.”
