I stand up straighter and look at her face. I’m not expecting to see tears. Confusion clouds any other feeling inside me. Is she crying for me and the loss of my father, or is this about Giancarlo?

“Falynn,” I say. “What is it?”

For a man who found out his father passed less than an hour ago, nothing compares to this moment—the seconds between my question and her answer. It’s nothing good. It’s bad news. It’s…

“Falynn,” I repeat, an unusual ripple of nerves in my stomach. I’m not someone who gets nervous; I’m a fucking King. One of the most powerful men in the country. Yet this woman’s mere tears have me suddenly in knots. “Tellme.”

“I don’t know what happened…but something did.”

“What does that mean?”

She inhales a shaky breath. “It’s not the time. Your father just passed.”

“Fuck the time. Tell me right now, Falynn. What’s bothering you?”

“When you were gone,” she says hesitantly. Finally, she lifts her gaze off the distant point she’s been staring at and looks up, her misty eyes on me. “Giancarlo…he made me have dinner with him. I didn’t know it, but he put something in the wine. Some kind of drug. I don’t remember any of it. But the next morning…I woke up without any clothes on. He was there, Gio. He wouldn’t tell me what happened except that…he says I came. That we did things…I don’t know what. I tried to fight it, but the drug was too strong. I passed out.”

There’s a ringing in my ears. The murderous urge returns at full force inside me, white-hot fury burning through my body, so intense it almost feels unreal. It’s almost unbearable, as if I’ll combust into flames that will scorch the entire fucking world.

Only one thought pierces the murderous haze now in total control.

Giancarlo has no clue what monster he’s just unleashed.

I’ll tear his guts out and wear them as my fucking crown.
