“None of your business.”

“Oh, c’mon. Cheer up, gorgeous.” His grin spreads suggestively, his hand gliding over the curve of my shoulder again. “I bet I can take your mind off things.”

Noah’s face transitions from his cocky grin to sheer horror in less than a second. His gaze lifts off me and to the group of men stalking toward us. He jerks his hand from my shoulder and backs away as if about to be accosted by the police.

Only this is so much worse.

Giovanni and some of his men immediately dominate the Ophelia. Everyone in the establishment falls silent and watches on as they stop in front of where I sit with Melissa.

“Get your hands off my wife.” His gaze is chilling and murderous, the rest of his face made of stone. It remains on Noah as his men close in tightly around us. “Marino,” he says, “take these gentlemen out back. I will join you shortly.”

His men rush to obey orders. Half of them snatch up Noah and his friend and drag them out, much to their desperate protests. Melissa’s tipsiness fades as she watches, her mouth agape.

“Giovanni… Pauly knows I’m here,” she says.

He ignores her. He directs his hard stare to me. “Get up,” he says. “Follow me. Don’t you dare say a fucking word.”

I’ve stopped breathing. I give a small nod and slide off the stool, unable to place the feeling inside me. It’s nothing good. More like the sick feeling you get when you’re certain something bad is about to happen.

Dread.

I said I didn’t care what happened when he found out I went against his wishes. Now I’m not so sure.
