“Did it ever occur to you to come to me about his threat? Did it ever occur to you that I would’ve provided you cover if you did the honorable thing, and told me about the plot against my wife? Do you know what that tells me, doc?”

He shakes his head, dropping his face into his hands.

“That tells me the money was a deciding factor. You wanted the twenty Gs in your bank account for doing nothing. For making my wife sick.”

“Please, Mr. Sorrentino, I’m sorry! I was scared…and…and my family was on the line. I don’t care about the money. You can have it. Take it back! I can fix this—bring your wife in and we can correct her treatment plan. You’ll be conceiving in no time.”

I release a cold laugh, reaching into my suit jacket and withdrawing my pistol. “Doc, you chose your side the second you accepted the money from Luca. There’s no fixing this; you fucked with my wife’s health. Now allow me to fuck with you.”

Louis slams him down into his chair when he attempts to get up. I take aim at his face. He sobs the whole time, snot and blood flowing freely. I could take my time and torture him, drag it out like I do with others, but I decide against it.

Torturing Romano in a way would be torturing myself. The guilt from not taking Falynn’s objections more seriously sooner already runs deep.

I pull the trigger and blast a hole in Romano's skull. He slumps in his chair, dead on the spot.

Louis slips on his gloves and starts cleaning up. “I thought you were going to make him suffer more. We could’ve taken him into one of his treatment rooms. All sorts of fun medical gadgets in there.”

“It was a thought, but…it’s best to move on,” I say with a heavy breath. I holster my gun and crack my neck. The migraine from my hangover hasn’t gotten better. It still throbs in a painful reminder of last night. “Louis, it’s time I get my shit together. I’ve let myself become distracted by the power.”

“Does this mean you’re going to win Mrs. Falynn back?”

I shake my head, ignoring the other ache I have; the guilt and shame from how I wronged her. “I’ve already told you. She’s better off without me. It’s best I stay away.”

Louis frowns, covering Romano's body in the tarp he brought. “So that’s it? It’s really over?”

“It’s time I get back to my old self. No more world-domination bullshit. It’s back to basics.”

“Does this mean I can work for you again?”

“If you want. I’ll transfer you. It’ll be good to have you around. You can talk me out of doing stupid shit when I need it.”

“You can count on it.” He heaves the dead weight that’s Romano's body wrapped up in a tarp over his shoulder. We head out the doctor’s office, the future never more of a mystery than it is now.
