Thad, as always, would politely agree.
“Miss, would you like music?” the driver asks, gesturing to the radio.
I reach for the tightly coiled bun on top of my head and pull the wooden pin holding it in place. Shaking my hair free, I say, “I would love some music.”
His reflection smiles in the rearview mirror.
“Could you put the windows down too, please?”
“You got it.”
Laying my head back, I let the salty sea air flow through my locks, ignoring the ping that sounds from my phone and the one that follows.

“Mmm,” I mumble into the lavish down comforter of my bed.
Curling into the mounds of pillows and sheets I’m buried beneath, I rub my face into the cool, silky fibers.
I’ve never slept so well in all my life.
A buzzing noise interrupts the stretch pulling my lower legs and arms. I slap my hand around the bed, searching for the source.
“What time is it?” The clock on the bedside table flashes red.
Ten o’clock in the morning.
My arms fall loosely, sinking into the comforter as I release a laugh. I can’t remember the last time I’ve slept this late.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
“Shit.”
I scramble to find the remote to the window’s retractable cover to get some light.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
“Yes, yes. I hear you!” My hand collides with something solid, flipping it off the bed and onto the floor with a bang.
Clad in an oversized tank top I bought from a street vender last night, I snag the buzzing device off the floor. Without even checking the caller ID, I press the bouncing green button and answer the call.
The room is pitch black, but I jump when my mother’s shrill voice paired with the whites of her eyes project from the phone screen.
“Katelynn Leanne Harris!”
Heart slapping against my sternum, I scurry to the nightstand.
“Oh, Mom. Hi!”
Grabbing the little knob, I yank the top drawer open, and cram my hand inside.
“Come on. Where are you, dammit?”
“Pardon me?” Mother says.
Aha!
“Nothing.” I grip of the tiny device, pressing random buttons until the shutter finally raises.
