Bryce, Aakesh, and Walter pound my back enthusiastically, but I can’t move. Everything around me slows to an unnatural pace.
This isn’t how she was supposed to find out. I wanted to be the one to talk her through it once we were alone.
Chuck and Brandi stand with the rest of the crowd, clapping along as my team gets ready to exit the stage. But not Kate. She remains sitting, a look of shock blanketing her beautiful face.
“Carlisle, are you alright?” Patrick says, waving a hand over my line of sight.
Unthinking, I duck away from him as Kate stands abruptly.
“Kate,” I say, quietly at first.
“Let’s welcome our next nominees to the stage,” the hostess starts, but I can’t move. I can’t breathe as I watch her move from her spot at the front of the room toward the exit.
“Kate!”
Bryce grabs my arm, but I yank it free, ignoring their stares.
“Fuck,” I say, pushing my way between them and down the short flight of stairs leading away from the stage.
“What’s going on?” Walter asks.
I take off for the back hallway, barely twisting over my shoulder to say, “Don’t wait up for me. I’ll catch you guys later.”
There’s no way I’m about to lose her. Not tonight. Not like this.
