She twists back to grip his bicep, giving it a playful squeeze. “He said you’re his best developer.”

“Did he now?”

Vedant’s answering smile is a sly one. He knows I’m after that international spot, and given that little insight, I’ll consider my ego officially stroked.

The hotel staff inside Double Palm happily checks us all in while the front desk manager gives a brief description of amenities. With four towers, three pools, and a private golf course, the place is utterly massive.

“Think I can convince Brandi to leave me here?” Chuck asks.

“You’ve lost your damn mind if you think I’m going home to those boys alone,” she says of their three wild sons.

Vedant shakes his head before leading us toward a set of all-glass elevators at the back of the lobby.

“It’s unfortunate that you couldn’t find a companion for the trip, Carlisle,” he says.

First Chuck, now my boss. What’s with the sudden interest in my love life?

“Haven’t had much time for dating since the divorce, sir.”

Because I’ve been working myself to death to forget her.

I’ve spent the better part of a year trying to undo the damage Susan’s wrought on my life—including my work reputation. The last fucking thing I want to do is find a replacement.

When our group pauses at the elevator doors, he turns to clap a hand over my shoulder. “Sometimes you get a crazy one. Believe me, I’ve been there.”

I highly doubt any of Vedant’s exes went stark raving mad, drove to his work, and then berated him in front of a room full of his co-workers after getting caught having sex with another man.

My gut rolls, making me instantly regret eating the airport food as soon as we landed. But thinking about Susan sort of has that effect on me.

Chuck swoops in with a half-cocked attempt at making me appear less pathetic. “Oh, come on. We’re on an island full of babes who’d love nothing more than a little one-on-one time with Damon Carlisle.”

“Chuck,” I mutter.

“In fact, I bet Damon can have a date lined up by tomorrow night.”

I inhale, trying to tell him to politelyshut the fuck up, but end up choking on spit instead.

Brandi slaps my back. I’m wheezing, holding on to the rail beside me as he winks, obviously proud of himself even though I want to throttle him.

“Wonderful!” Vedant smiles wide, and I’m not sure I like that curious gleam in his eye. “Because I’ve scheduled us a private dinner with Mr. Vance this Friday on his yacht, and I plan to introduce you to him.”

Chuck wiggles his brows, leaving me shocked still and staring.

“Patrick Vance. As in, the CEO of Triggerz?” I ask.

“The one and only,” Vedant supplies.

The elevator doors slide open to our floor, and I’m somehow stepping out even though my feet have gone numb.

Chuck opens his big fat mouth once more. “I bet OneDate is teeming with ladies.”

I cut a glance his way that’s so sharp, I’m surprised his head doesn’t roll.

“No, no. That’s—”

“Brilliant!” Vedant flashes a bright white smile. “Think of how impressive it’ll be to see you with a date from your own creation, Carlisle.”

I scrub a hand over my stubbled jaw.
