It must be the alcohol that has our bodies melding together in time to the beat, and it must be that I’m much too tired to resist the hand that’s now carefully splayed low on my back. Because when Damon leans in, and his deep voice rumbles through my hair, I’m achingly aware of how little I care to resist him.

“I’m noboy, Miss Harris.”

My lips part on a gasp. He watches as my entire body heats, and I know without a doubt that I’ll never forget those oceanic eyes as long as I live.

I hesitate one breath before boldly running my hands along the length of his forearms. Up they go until I’m gripping his traps and slowly tilting my head back.

I swear he growls near my fully exposed neck, and just the thought has a zip of electricity feathering between my thighs.

Damon squeezes my sides, holding me confidently before guiding me backward. I arch, dipping down in a similar fashion like Brandi, only Damon doesn’t tuck his face into my breasts as his friend did with his wife. Instead, he blows a rush of warm air over my cleavage, eliciting a spine-tingling shiver.

He straightens us to standing as the song transitions, and I blink, unsure of what just happened. Something primal yawns to life in his gaze, and I take a step back, feeling every bit of my twenty-three years compared to a man with such prowess.

“How old are you?” I blurt.

The question jars him, as if he hadn’t truly considered our age difference.

“Too old for you,” he supplies, just as Brandi and Chuck are wiggling their way through the crowd.

“See, Kate? I knew one dance would do you some good.” Brandi smacks her husband’s chest. “Chuck, this is Kate.”

His eyes carefully slide to Damon, then to me.

A grin animates his face. “Nice to meet you. You don’t have to hang around with this stick in the mud, you know. We’re a lot more fun.” He hooks a thumb over his shoulder toward the rest of their group.

“He’s not so bad,” I say, catching Damon’s gaze, and then clear my throat. “Ah, thank you, guys, for letting me hang out for a bit. But I really should be heading back.”

That same wild lock hangs over Damon’s forehead, and I’m all too aware of his scent all over me. “Good luck finding a date for your event.”

I get a strange sense of something hanging in the air. Kind of like we’re leaving something left unsaid even though we’ve only just met.

Damon squeezes Brandi’s shoulder before offering me a tight smile. “It was nice meeting you, Miss Harris.”

I count my breaths as he turns to leave until I’m thinking straight once again.

“How long are you staying?” Brandi asks.

“Oh, I’m honestly not sure.” Pulling my hair over my shoulder, I give it a twist. “A couple of weeks. Possibly longer.”

If I manage to survive.

She winks. “Maybe I’ll see you around?”

Damon stands beneath the neon palm tree with one hand resting casually in the pocket of his dress pants, laughing with his friends. An echo of what we just experienced flits across the room, whispering around me like a secret I’m supposed to keep.

“Yeah.” I blink once, twice before answering her. “Maybe you will.”
