“That a girl. That’s exactly what you needed, isn’t it?”

She practically melts in my hold, nuzzling her face into the side of my neck and sighing contentedly.

I surprise myself by pressing my lips to her crown before lowering her to the floor. As soon as her heels touch, someone clears their throat from behind me.

“Fuck.” I jump, slamming my hands against the wall to protect Kate’s exposed lower half.

The slightest scrunch of her nose easily indicates who the voice belongs to.

Kate peeks over my shoulder. “Oh, hey. What’s up?”

She’s still flushed from her orgasm, and her dress is a wrinkled mess.

Sheer perfection.

“I was coming to let you know we’re about to dock,” Shaylea says coolly, pointing to her mouth. “You may wanna freshen up.”

“Thanks,” I say over my shoulder. “We’ll be up in a minute.”

We listen to her stomp her way back up the stairs until her footfalls fade completely.

“Thank you,” Kate says softly.

Her lips and neck are coated in a thin layer of purple, and I’m still semi-erect.

If I’m half as smart as I like to think I am, I’ll make a pact right here and now not to kiss this salacious woman ever again.

But given the way she just came for me after confessing my dirty secrets—the odds of that happening are slim, if not zero.

Rolling down the sleeve of my maroon shirt, I use the inside cuff to tenderly swipe beneath her chin until most of the purple is gone.

“Come on. We can finish cleaning up upstairs.”

She grabs my forearm. “Damon, wait.”

Whoever is guiding the yacht into port blows the horn three times.

“I’m happy to have helped you tonight, but maybe it was a good thing we got interrupted.” She folds a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “We can’t keep this up. It won’t end well for either of us, and we both know it.”

It doesn’t matter that she’s right. Kate’s been a long-needed breath of air in my aching lungs, and she’s not slipping from my grasp that easily.

“I could try to find a different hotel.” She makes a frail attempt at a joke. “One without mice.”

“No,” I say flatly.

“Excuse me?”

I rack my brain for a reason to keep her.

The thing is, I know it’s a bad idea to get involved with Kate with just over a week left of the retreat, but I can’t let her walk away. Not now. Not with my heart still slamming away in my chest.

“The award ceremony.”

Her head tilts.

“It’s being held at the Double Palm next Saturday.” I run a hand through my ruffled hair. “And… I’d be honored if you accompanied me.”

Tapping the toe of her high heel, she considers my offer.
