Carefully moving my hands over his scruffy cheeks, I maneuver his head so that he’s staring straight ahead. “Something I found would help was searching for my little brother in the crowd.”

Backing up one step at a time, I keep my gaze held on his as I wedge myself between Chuck and Brandi. Using two fingers, I point between our gazes. “If you can find someone in the crowd who can keep you grounded, it’ll be easier for the rest of the chaos to melt away.”

He doesn’t seem convinced, but he entertains me anyway.

I guide Brandi to stand about a foot away before twisting to do the same to Chuck. “Trust me. Focus only on my face for a minute, and tell me if they start to blur from your periphery.”

Focus on Dylan, I used you to tell myself. At first, background noise would fade, then the faces in the crowd and the lights, leaving just me and my little brother.

“It’s… working,” he admits.

“Kate! You’re a genius.” Brandi claps.

A world of emotion rests between us when I find myself next to Damon.

“See, I told you. You just gotta find your anchor.”

Lately, we’ve been tiptoeing around a livewire of tension that’s been stretched and pulled taut. But right now, there are no suggestive winks or fevering touches.

Just me, Damon, and our soft, shy smiles.

“Thank you,” he says.

“Sure. We can practice as often as you’d like before your big day.” I clasp my hands behind my back. “Maybe… I could be your person?”

His stormy ocean eyes fall to my pink-lipstick-coated lips. “I’ve already added it to the contract.”
