Chapter 1

Mac

“I’ll be in early tomorrow morning to look over the press release, just have Marley put it on my desk when she’s done with it,” I said to Charles, my assistant, as I stopped at his desk.

“Sure thing, Mac. Don’t forget you have the meeting with WineMakers Magazine tomorrow and then you’re meeting with the rep from the House of Remy Martin right after,” Charles said.

“Yes, I remember. Thank you,” I said.

I strolled past his desk and down the hall to Morgan Shetfield’s office. I gave a quick knock on the door as I walked in. Morgan was sitting at her desk, her long blonde hair pulled into a tight bun and her head was stuck deep into a box.

“Come to say one more goodbye?” she asked from inside the box.

“How did you know it was me?” I asked as I moved all the way into her office.

“You’re the only one who ever knocked and then came right in,” she said as she lifted her head up, her blue eyes were bright as she smiled at me.

“Well, I am, or was, your boss, I didn’t feel I actually needed to wait to be allowed in. The knock was just a courtesy.”

“And you always were very courteous. It’s one of the things I’ll miss about having you as my boss.”

“How can you miss a boss when you’re going to be the boss?”

She beamed at me mentioning her leaving to start her own public relations firm. Morgan had been with me, and my family’s company, Bennett Liquor, for many years, but she had recently gone out on her own. A move I supported, even if I hated losing one of my best employees.

“There is that,” she said and let out a sigh.

“Still hasn’t hit you that you’re really doing this?”

“Oh, no, it has hit. I’m still not sure how smart it is,” she said with a laugh.

“If you want your old job back, just say the word and it’s yours. It might take a bit of persuading from the head guy, but I’m sure you can get him to agree.”

“Walker is my biggest supporter,” Morgan said, mentioning her boyfriend and my youngest brother.

“As CEO of the company you’re leaving, he might have a say in getting you to stay.”

“He supports me, as I thought you did,” Morgan asked and crossed her arms under her chest.

“Always. Of course. I would also support you if you wanted to come back and work with us.”

“Thank you, but no. I’ve made up my mind and I’m sticking to it. Did you come to say a final goodbye or to try to get me to stay?”

“Neither. I wanted to have the joy of being able to walk into this office one more time and see you in it, come tomorrow, you won’t be. I couldn’t be happier or prouder of you and what you’ve accomplished and decided to do. There is no goodbye, not when you’re moved in with my brother and are practically a part of the family.”

“Practically, and I’m fine staying there for now.”

“Fair enough.”

Since Walker and Morgan had moved in with each other, my siblings and I had started teasing them about getting married. Morgan and Walker were both sticking to their guns that they were happy living together, for now. If I knew my brother as well as I thought I did, he wouldn’t wait very long before he popped the question.

“Are you going to be okay here on your own?”

“If I said no, would you stay?” I asked, half teasing.

“No, but that’s sweet of you to ask.”

“I’m going to miss this. Talking to you, bouncing ideas off of you, having you put me in my place when need be.”
